What Is an Affirming Church?

At Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, being an affirming church is more than a label; it is a living expression of our faith and commitment to embodying God’s unconditional love for all people. Affirmation here means recognizing and celebrating every individual as a beloved child of God, exactly as they are, without exception or qualification.

Affirming Church: A Theology of Radical Inclusion

As an affirming church, our pastor, staff, and church community hold firmly to the belief that God creates each person uniquely and wonderfully. Of course, this includes all LGBTQIA+ people without requiring conformity to traditional gender norms or heteronormative expectations. Affirming churches like ours embrace a theology that welcomes all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions as part of God’s diverse creation.

Our affirmation is grounded in the core Lutheran principles of grace, love, and community. We understand that salvation is a gift freely given by God, extended to everyone. Therefore, our church strives to create a safe, supportive space where all people, regardless of background, identity, or experience, can worship, serve, and grow in faith together.

Affirmation Is Love

Biblical affirmation is not mere flattery or empty acceptance. It is a courageous and intentional act of love and acceptance that builds up the body of Christ. Like the Apostle Paul, who thanked God for the faith and love of the early believers, we affirm one another in ways that strengthen faith, encourage perseverance, and point us all toward Christ, the source of our hope and unity.

This kind of affirmation requires vulnerability and commitment. It means speaking words that uplift and empower, even when it feels uncomfortable or risky. It is about fostering trust, respect, and deep connection within our community, so that everyone feels seen, valued, and supported.

An Affirming Church in Practice

At Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, affirmation is lived out in tangible and intentional ways that reflect our deep commitment to radical inclusion. We openly declare that all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, races, ethnicities, and abilities are welcomed and encouraged to share their unique gifts, talents, and presence within our community.

Our worship services consistently affirm LGBTQIA+ individuals as part of our Christian community. Whatever a person’s gender, sexual orientation, history, or experiences, we strive to create a safe and supportive space for everyone to grow in faith. We actively advocate for justice and equity, standing with marginalized communities and working to dismantle barriers both within the church and in society.

An affirming church recognizing that the richness of ministry is enhanced by the full diversity of God’s people. Therefore, we celebrate and support the callings of LGBTQIA+ clergy and lay leaders in our Christian call to create a welcoming community where everyone can safely share their stories, struggles, and joys without fear of judgment or exclusion.
